Will doing ab exercises just make me have a bulkier stomach?

i have recently started dieting( eating healthy) and started loosing some weight. I want to loose my stomach and be thinner so i started doing ab exercises, but someone told me that im just going to build muscle under neath the fat. I don't want to be bulky i want to be thin and have a slim looking stomach. what to do?
